Tailgating Tip – Fire Pits

As the weather gets colder, the fire pit is a great way to stay warm at your tailgate. Fire pits aren’t allowed at all tailgating locations, but if you tailgate at an area where you can use one, some simple tops can make the experience more enjoyable.

For thousands of years fire has been essential for survival, just ask Jeff Probst. And keeping warm at your tailgate is also essential, just ask any tailgater who has had a miserable day because of cold fingers, toes, and tush. By following these simple fire pit rules, you can tailgate even when the temperatures plummet.

NEVER USE GASOLINE TO START OR KEEP FIRE BURNING.

  1. Make sure the fire pit is located away from flammable objects.
  2. Never build a fire inside an enclosed structure such as a house, building or RV.
  3. Always have an extinguisher of some sort on hand whether it be a bucket of water or fire extinguisher.
  4. Build your fire small to start to determine wind direction. Use a starter block or dryer lint to get your fire going.
  5. Burn a hardwood such as a well seasoned oak, estimate on burning 5 logs an hour. You add cherry to your fire pit, which will give off a pleasant smell. Burning man made logs is an option, but do not cook over them unless they are rated for cooking.
  6. Use a grated fire pit cover to prevent embers from popping out of fire.
  7. Have a good set of work gloves on hand along with a grate rod to, this makes removing the grate cove much easier and safer to take on and off.
  8. Extinguish fire completely.
  9. Never, ever use gasoline to start or keep fire going, this extremely dangerous and can result in serious injury or death.
